Be Glad!- Omar Khayyam

A little Persian poetry from the beloved Omar Khayyam to end this beautiful spring weekend:

خیام، اگر ز باده مستی، خوش باش

با لاله رخی اگر نشستی خوش باش

چون عاقبت کار جهان نیستی است

انگار که نیستی، چو هستی خوش باش

Khayyam agar z bada masti khosh bash
ba lalerokhi neshasti khosh bash
chon aghebate kare jahan nistist
engar ke nisti, cho hasti khosh bash

Khayyam, if thou art drunk with wine, be glad!
If seated next one with tulip cheeks, be glad!
Since the world's work has no hereafter, think then
Though mightst not be- but since thou art, be glad!

Translation- Edward Fitzgerald

  3. Khayyám, if heaven forbid, you find yourself drunk, be happy
If with a red tulip you find yourself seated, be happy
For the culmination of the universe's doing is nothingness
As if you don't exist, because you exist, be happy
