Movie of the Week- About Elly
This week I finally had the chance to watch Darbareye Elly, About Elly. This film was directed by Asghar Farhadi who won an Oscar for his movie A Separation.
It's about the relationship of a group of friends who take a trip to the Caspian Sea. There are three different couples and one of the women, Sepideh, played by Golshifteh Farahani, uses this vacation as an opportunity for Elly to meet her friend Ahmad who is visiting from Germany. Later, Elly disappears, and they don't know if she has returned back to Tehran or if she drowned in the sea. The group starts to blame each other for the events leading up to her disappearance, and they realize they really don't know much about her other than the fact that she was Sepideh's daughter's kindergarten teacher.
I greatly enjoyed watching this movie as the suspense truly kept me guessing. The change in dynamic between the friends from beginning to end was also well-developed. As Mr. Farhadi's movies often do at the end, I had questions about the motives and was left with my own interpretations of them. Bonus- My Persian Corner's words of the day damet garm and bacheha are used! Click on the link below to watch this movie with English subtitles.
