Persian Word of the Day- Pishi

In honor of our Iran Traveler guest Mandy Tay and her favorite Persian word, I present you with our word of the day:

پیشی / pishi / kitty cat

Gorbeh is cat, but pishi is more like kitty cat because of the way Iranians call cats. The same way that in English we say "here kitty, kitty, kitty" in Persian, we say "pishi, pishi, pishi."

It's also a popular name for cats. If you are Iranian and have or have had a cat, chances are it was named Pishi. I myself am guilty of this.

  1. in greek we say psipsìna for a kitty cat

  2. Replies
    1. Interesting! Very similar in both Greek and Bulgarian :)

  3. Will be adopting a cat named Pishi (hopefully) --- however shelter spelled it "Peeshi"

    1. That's wonderful! The name never goes out of style :) What kind of cat is it?

  4. OK,...I know I'm late...but just one more. In Dutch a cat is a "poes" pronounced "poos" and the diminutive (and the endearing form) of poes is "poesje".
    Pronounced "pooshye".
Facts are indeed sometimes stranger than fiction.
