Music Monday: Googoosh- Gharibe Ashena

It's always hard to get back to work after a nice lazy weekend. So why not get your Monday started with some mooseghi Irooni, Iranian music?

I'll feature a different song every Monday complete with lyrics and a [rough] translation. I'm a sucker for old classics, but have a request? Just leave a comment, and I will do my best!

Gharibe Ashena // Familiar Stranger
--Googoosh

To az shahreh gharibeh bi neshooni oomadi // You came from a strange, unknown city
To ba asbeh sefideh mehrabooni oomadi // You came on a white horse with kindness
To az dashthayeh door o jaadehayeh por ghobar // You came from far away deserts and dusty roads
Baraye ham sedayi ham zabooni oomadi // You came for someone who understands you
To az rah miresi por az gard o ghobar // You arrive covered in dust
Tamoomeh entezar miyad hamrat bahat // All expectation comes with you
Che khoobe didanet, che khoobe moondanet // How good it is to see you, how good is your staying
Che khoobe pak konam ghobaro az tanet // How good it is to wipe this dust off your body

Gharibe ashena, doostet daram bia // familiar stranger, I love you, come
Mano hamrat bebar, be shahreh gheseha // Take me with you, to the land of fairytales
Begir dasteh mano too oon dastat // Take my hand in your hands
Che khoobe saghfemoon, yeki bashe baham // How great to have one roof for both of us
Bemoonam montazer, ta bargardi pisham // To wait for you, until you come back to me
Too zendoonam, ba to man azadam // I'm in a prison, with you I am free

Mishinam mishmoram, roozha o lahzeha // I'll sit and count the days and moments
Ta bargardi biayi bazam inja // Until you return to me again

Che khoobe saghfemoon, yeki bashe baham // How great to have one roof for both of us

Bemoonam montazer, ta bargardi pisham // To wait for you, until you come back to me
Too zendoonam, ba to man azadam // I'm in prison, with you I'm free

  3. Hee hee, I saw Gugush when she was still like this, in July 1970. She was into one of her many chameleon phases by the time she sang Gharibe ashena sometime in 1974 (year before my maybe all time fave Hamsafar). Actually I've a more terrible boast: I’ve recorded using the same mics as she did in those golden old 70s days.
Farshad Shafiee’s wonderful chronological collection on Youtube is well worth knowing about for Gugush fans. Starts at GOOGOOSH 1 (1345/1966) and ends at 20 (1358/1979).
