Persian Word of the Day- degh kardan

Is it possible to die of a broken heart? Iranians think so. In fact, we have a word for it:

دق کردن / degh kardan / to die of sorrow or grief

Even though we very well may mean it, a lot of times Iranians use this word in an effort to be dramatic. "That movie was so depressing that degh kardam!, I died of sorrow!" Or someone might say to their loved one, "If I don't see you again/soon, degh mikonam!, I'll die of sorrow!"

With all this snow causing us to be locked indoors day after day, I, for one, can say that if it continues and spring doesn't come soon, degh mikonam! (And I can just hear my mom gasping now as she says, Khodā nakone! Doshmanet degh kone!, God forbid! May your enemy...).
