The Prince of My Dreams

Today's post is doubling as the Sunday poem and Monday song because the song/poem is just that wonderful. This is another song that's been done by many different artists, and rightfully so because it's perhaps one of the most beautiful Persian songs I've ever heard. More than others, I feel like it  transcends any language barrier, and you don't have to speak Persian to appreciate its beauty (or the beauty of the Persian language), *truly*. I heard a version of it last week that brought me to tears. Unfortunately, none of these are that version, but they are the next best things. Here are a few different versions of Shahzādeye Royāye Man, The Prince of My Dreams, starting with the original from Ahdie in the movie Dālāhoo. Which one is your favorite?

ye shab to khāb vaghte sahar // one night I dreamt at a moment of twilight
shahzādeyi zarin kamand // a golden prince
neshaste bar asbe sefid // riding a white horse
miyumad az kuho kamar // was coming through mountains and valleys
miraft o ātash be delam // moving and igniting my heart
mizad negāhash // with his glances
miraft o ātash be delam // moving and igniting my heart
mizad negāhash // with his glances
kāshki delam rosvā beshe // I hope my heart's secrets are revealed
daryā beshe in do cheshme por ābam // and my teary eyes become the sea
ruzi ke bakhtam bāz beshe // the day luck finds me
biyār beshe un ke umad be khābam // and I'll find the one who comes into my dreams
shahzādeye royāye man shāyad toyi // perhaps you are the prince of my dreams
un kas ke shab dar khābe man āyad toyi, to // the one that I see in my dreams is you, you
az khābe shirin nāgah paridam // I suddenly awoke from this sweet dream
oo rā nadidam digar kenāram bekhodā // I didn't see him by my side anymore, truly
jānam reside az ghose bar lab // my soul is consumed with sorrow
har ruz o har shab // all day and all night
dar entezāram bekhodā // just waiting, truly
kāshki delam rosvā beshe // I hope my heart's secrets are revealed
daryā beshe in do cheshme por ābam // and my teary eyes become the sea
ruzi ke bakhtam bāz beshe // the day luck finds me
biyār beshe un ke umad be khābam // and I'll find the one who comes into my dreams

miraft o ātash be delam // moving and igniting my heart
mizad negāhash // with his glances
